About two months ago, I was talking to a career coaching prospect and he talked about how he had been stuck in the position, same organization for years and he was tired.
He felt that the solution was to go to another organization.
“How long have you been in the same position?” I asked
“12 years” he responded with an emotion of frustration
We had a long chat and then, I felt inspired to ask a very unusual question…
“In the last 12 years, how much have you invested in your personal and career growth?”
He paused on the other end of the phone and then later responded…
“Nothing that I can remember apart from my university degree and also attending company trainings”
“Well, attending company led trainings is a good thing but not enough because you are just like other colleagues at your workplace. There is nothing extra you are learning that would give you a competitive edge” I added
I advised him along the following lines…
“Your university degree was your first planting season and you harvested a job that you currently have” I stated.
“To get a second harvest, you need a second planting season. That means investing in your personal and career development. That means investing more time, energy and money in yourself” I continued
“And if you keep planting good seeds in the right soil, then you will keep harvesting” I concluded
He appreciated my upfront advice. But I wasn’t done…
“Even If you went to a new organization or place, you will still go with you. The old you”
“The ultimate solution is not to go to a new organization. Instead, you need to get out of your old self and get into a new version of you with better skills, better attitudes and execution…that’s the solution” I added.
There was silence at the other end of the phone
“If you are a great performer and always growing, the market will always finally seek you out. If you don’t, the market will not bother to know you and won’t make you offers” I asserted
Now, the truth is that in a few instances, you need to move to a new external environment.
But most times, it’s about you…your inner environment.
How can you tell the difference?
Usually, you need a third party who can objectively advise
Not your friends because they may not be as objective because they don’t want to hurt your feelings.
My advice is that you find a coach you resonate with because your financial investment will compel them to tell you the truth and the truth shall set you free.
