Unwrapping the Garrett Framework for Engaging Training that Sparks Change

Last month, I attended a training session led by Garrett J White, where he introduced a 4-part training framework that I found insightful, practical, and powerful. This framework is highly effective and can be utilized by any trainer or facilitator to enhance their sessions.

Having a structured framework to follow makes training significantly easier and more effective. Without a framework, the process can become cumbersome and less impactful. After over 20 years of experience as a facilitator and trainer, I consider this the most straightforward and practical framework I have encountered. I am calling it the “Garrett Framework.” Here’s how it works:

Teach

Begin by teaching the content you wish to impart. Spend a few minutes sharing your knowledge and expertise on the topic. This step lays the foundation for the training.

Type

Next, ask your participants to type or write down their insights and discoveries. This activity helps to engrain the learnings in their minds and solidify their understanding.

Talk

After the participants have finished writing, encourage them to share their reflections with each other. This discussion deepens the learning experience, as participants gain new perspectives from their peers’ diverse backgrounds.

Train

Finally, have the participants train each other by mirroring what you taught. This step not only reinforces their learning but also helps them achieve mastery of the content.

Though seemingly simple, the impact of this framework can be phenomenal.
